Emergency Response Center
It’s the time of the year when the Edgewood Fireman are planning their annual
fundraiser and with that comes the excitement of moving forward on the
construction of the new Emergency Response Center. The Edgewood Firemen
will be hosting their annual dance at Graffittis on Saturday, March 12th. The
event will begin at 8 PM until midnight with music provided by Lonesome Road, a
high energy country rock band appearing live from Cedar Rapids. An Edgewood
native, Chad Chopard, is a member of this band and is the bass guitarist with
the group. Admission to the event is $5. Along with the music, the firemen will
be hosting their annual raffle. Prizes include 2 quarters of beef and 2 half
hogs, dust control, a load of rock, furniture and many other various prizes.
Tickets may be purchased from any of the Edgewood Firemen, at Edgewood Farm and
Home and Community Savings Bank. For the next two Saturdays, February 19th
and February 26th, the Firemen will be visiting rural customers seeking
donations for their fundraiser. Edgewood residents will be receiving a mailer.
In the past, the fundraiser proceeds have been used to purchase equipment but
this year, the funds will be put towards the new Fire Station and EMS Building.
The plans for the building are designed and ready to be sent to various
government agencies to inspect for their approval. Once the plans are approved
as needed, they will be let to general contractors so bids may be taken for the
construction. It is hoped that the building will be completed by this fall.
Construction of the Emergency Response Center will take place on the lot north
of CVG and will house the fire station and ambulance garage along with a storm
safe room. The building is roughly 12,800 square feet. There will be six stalls
for fire trucks, a drive through stall for the ambulance and meeting rooms. The
fire departments meeting room will also serve as the storm safe room, which
means that the walls and ceiling will be all concrete. This room will be open
for residents of the community needing shelter when severe weather warnings are
issued. At the present time, $850,000 in grants have already been approved to be
used for the construction of this building. An IJOBS grant in the amount of
$350,000, a USDA grant in the amount of $100,000 and a $400,000 grant from FEMA
for the storm safe room. Elise Bergan, Edgewood Chamber Director and Cindy
Vorwald, Edgewood City Clerk have been very instrumental in obtaining these
grants. “We are very grateful to these ladies for their assistance in obtaining
the grants for this project.” stated JD Degenford, Edgewood Fire Chief. JD
also stated that the new fire station is being built for growth in the
community. At the present time, both the EMS and fire station buildings do not
have adequate room for the standards expected for raining and equipment needs.
The Edgewood Firemen do all of their own maintenance on the fire equipment to
save funds. The new building will be a great addition in this factor along with
getting the trucks cleaned up after they have been out on a call. This is
an exciting project happening in Edgewood.
The Edgewood Fire Department currently has 28 VOLUNTEER
firemen. Ninety percent of those firemen have completed their Firefighter I
Certified class (which takes 94 hours of class to complete) and sixty percent of
them have completed the Firefight II Certification. Our community is very
fortunate to have this many dedicated volunteer fireman to be there when we need
them. It’s our turn to be there for them and support this fundraiser.
